Second band and some math

Finished the second braid in a bit of a rush today. Took photos while it was still on the loom – pink is just impossibly unphotogenic.

This time I remembered to measure and note down everything I could think of.

  • The braid is 101 cm long and about 1.2–1.3 cm wide.
  • Total warp thread used: 64 metres.
  • Out of that, around 16 metres (!) ended up as technical waste – about half a metre of warp (along with tablets and weights) had to be cut off from the finished braid.
  • The tassels left on for now are 15 cm on each end. Once the braid is sewn onto the mittens, only the tiniest bit will remain – meaning at least another 6 metres will go to waste.
  • Weft thread usage: 6 metres, with a little to spare.
  • Prep time (cutting the threads, threading the tablets, and warping the loom): 20 minutes.
  • Weaving speed averages at 8 cm per 10 minutes – that’s pure weaving time, not counting technical manipulations like dealing with the twist.
  • So, if you’re not stopping for tea or other distractions, you can weave a band like this in roughly 3 hours.

P.S. Have I mentioned that acrylic is a disaster in the tablets? Well, it is. 👿
